Hello Friends of SPG Guitars!

What does Starbucks & Guitars have in common?

The SPG Guitars E-Mail Newsletter that went out this past Monday raised a lot of questions. I thank all the people that sent e-mails with their concerns as well as comments. For those that have no idea what I'm referring to, this was the article based on Low-end Guitars or aka "Made In China".

In this newsletter I just wanted to share a few comments and I'll put this to bed. I know this topic can open a huge can of worms because it's not just related to the Guitar Industry. It seems like every day there is a new recall on China Goods. If you haven't heard the news yet today about the Starbucks Coffee Mug recall you will - (Starbucks recalls mug with faulty handle - Consumer news- msnbc.com)

I find this even new book even more fascinating - Year Without "Made in China": One Family's True Life Adventure in the Global Economy If you haven't heard about this book it should open some eyes on how much we depend and use China made products on a daily basis. Just check out the 2 minute video segment on how pathetic the situation is.

Going back to Monday's newsletter which was also posted on our SPG MySpace Blog, check out this comment from a person named Shawn. Nice to see people defend the USA Guitar maker.

If you want to see some actual data, check out this link and review the actual numbers of recalls this year, scary...

And since it's the holidays, this sad but true article just sums it up - China Product Recalls Continue - Christmas Toy Nightmare

Oh ya, here's the original article from Monday...

 http://www.starpowerguitars.com/2007_mmr_article1.html

So back to the guitar industry, in summary, all I can say is support your local guitar luthier or products/guitars made here in the good old USA. A good custom made guitar should cost well over $1,000 just for starters, anything less - you can almost garentee where it came from. Not saying all overseas made guitars are bad or not sufficient - I know, we used to sell them, some were actually pretty good and not everyone can afford custom quality guitars. But I can honestly say any decent player that bought inexpensive guitars from us in the past were ripping out the parts and pickups for more expensive, better sounding, better quality parts anyway, we know that.

My rule of thumb; unless your a collector, and you play 4 to 5 nights a week and you're serious about guitar playing, you should think about a custom, high quality, made in the USA guitar. Or chances are, you're already playing one...

Because the cheap guitars, they might last a year or so and then end up in a landfill; which presents another whole problem - don't get me started on that....

Until Next Time ... Keep Rockin'

Rick
